2022 Montemelino Grappolo Rosso, 750ml
This family-run estate has been making wine since 1961, when Margret Etten Cantarelli founded the winery. These days, her daughter Sabina is at the helm, keeping things moving into the next generation. “Grappolo” is a 60/40 blend of Sangiovese and Gamay del Trasimeno, a local grape variety that’s closely related to Grenache and pretty unique to the area.
The wine is juicy and fresh, with plenty of sour cherry, wild herbs and a nice mineral edge. The Gamay del Trasimeno adds a little extra flesh and chewiness to the Sangiovese without making things heavy. Super easy to drink and exactly the kind of red we want around in the warmer months. Throw it in the fridge for a bit and crack it with grilled pork chops, burgers, or a big summer salad.
